The images below are examples of different female superheroes. They show the different costume types as well as the physique of the typical female superhero.

Assignment: developing a character
For the assignment for this module we are required to develop a character and produce three drawings; one skeleton, one of muscle form and one finished character with clothing.
I decided that I wanted to produce a female superhero character with a strong muscular, but still feminine physique. I decided on this character idea because I want a character that promotes a healthy body image, as this is a current issue for my generation. I also think that an athletic physique allows me to explore more in the muscle drawing. I chose a superhero character so that the third drawing will be interesting in terms of clothing.
For the rest of this semester I will work on these three drawings by using reference material and practicing the techniques I will need for the final drawings.

Return of the female model
Today we had the female life model to draw, again using pencil and charcoal. We did a series of quick 30 second poses, followed by a couple of no looking and wrong handed tasks and then some 30 minute poses. We finished off with two 5 minute poses. When I look back over my sketches throughout the weeks I do feel like I have improved. I now know how to set out my drawings properly to get the right proportions and angles, and I ave also found that I prefer the more expression are sketches as a posed to the more clinical detailed drawings.

Life Drawing with Light and Shadow
Today we worked with charcoal to create life drawings using the shadows to show the form of the body. I really enjoyed it and was pleased with my results. I think I'm better at the more creative and unusual pieces instead of the straight forward drawing of the model.

Life Drawing class
Today was our second life drawing class. The tasks included 30 second sketches, sketching without looking (again..which I love!), Sketching 4 poses in movement eg. sitting to standing, turning around. We also did some larger more complete drawings using charcoal which was really good. Charcoal is a nice medium to use as you can create much of the form of the body by smudging the charcoal instead of drawing every line and shadow.

First Class: Life Drawing
Our first class in the Observational Drawing module was a life drawing class. It was abit daunting at first because I haven't done any drawing since college and I was worried was going to be rubbish compared to everyone else. But I was quite pleased to learn that the majority of the group hadn't done any life drawing before either, so I felt a little more at ease!
I really enjoyed the class as it made a nice change from sitting at the computer getting frustrated with software. We had a couple of different tasks to do including quick 2 minute and 5 minute poses, which were rather unsuccessful as I am not used to drawing so quickly. We then moved on to longer poses and also had a really difficult task. We had to draw for 10 minutes without looking at our paper, just looking at the details of the model. It was soooo hard not to look at what you were drawing and the results were hilarious! They looked nothing like a proper person, but they were quite 'modern arty'.
I learned a few techniques about measuring angles and lengths in order to get proportions right and I am really looking forward to developing my skills a lot more over the course of the module.
